Breaking the Cycle: Why Healing Yourself Still Matters in a Broken World

Do Your Choices Matter, or Not?

At some point, this comes down to a simple question:
Do our actions and behaviors actually matter?

There’s a worldview that says the world is too broken, too corrupt, too far gone for individual actions to mean anything.

And yes- there absolutely are real problems. Real dysfunction. Real things outside of your control.

But that truth gets twisted into something else:

“If nothing can be fixed, nothing I do matters.”

That’s not realism. That’s resignation & quite frankly- a cop out.

The Logic Falls Apart

“If bigger problems exist, smaller efforts are pointless.”

It sounds logical. It isn’t.

There’s a difference between:
“This won’t fix everything” and
“This does nothing.”

One is honest.
The other is avoidance.

No, you are not responsible for the entire world.
But, you are absolutely responsible for your participation in it.

And your habits, your standards, and the environment around you- they shape that participation- whether you admit it or not.

The Nervous System Factor

This part is easy to overlook especially when we are focused on the world at large.

When our nervous system is dysregulated, we don’t operate from clarity- we are operating from a state of survival.

That means faster reactions, shorter patience, & narrower thinking. It becomes much more challenging to feel into the truth of connection and the very real effect we have on the people and the world around us.

That state doesn’t stay contained. It shows up in our tone, our decisions, our relationships.

When we regulate (through self-awareness, breath, stillness, presence) we shift out of that.

And that shift is not just internal- it has very real world influence though our actions & behaviors.

The Ripple Is Real

We are not a closed systems.

Our state affects how we move through the world.
And how we move affects other people.

Stress spreads & calmness spreads.

One reactive person can shift a room.
One grounded person can steady it.

That’s not at all abstract, it’s observable. Nervous systems sync up to each other. We can see this in its most direct effect during childhood, co-regulating with our caregivers. If a parent is stressed (even if they hide it very well- the child’s nervous system responds in a real measurable way) We are designed to co-regulate with other humans. And we have the opportunity to ensure we do our best to regulate our own systems so we aren’t spreading more of the “bad” energy we don’t desire.

You interrupt a pattern in yourself, and you stop passing it on.

That’s the ripple.

“But the Problems Are Too Big”

Large systems feel overwhelming because they are.
But they are not separate from individuals. In fact these systems are made up of individuals. And individuals haves patterns.

Many large systems are built, maintained, and reinforced by patterns:
disconnection,
avoidance,
reactivity,
lack of accountability.

The same patterns that exist internally manifest through these systems in the world.

So when you change those patterns in yourself, you are removing one instance of that dysfunction from the system.

That doesn’t fix everything. But it is not nothing.

Is it possible to remove all false perceptions?

If the World Is Broken, Why Try?

(that’s even more reason)

Let’s take the “why try?” logic seriously for a second.
If the world is chaotic, controlled, or harmful—
then becoming more reactive, more negative, more disconnected doesn’t resist that.

It aligns with it.

If anything, clarity becomes more valuable.
Groundedness becomes more necessary.
Self-awareness becomes a form of stability.

Otherwise, you’re not stepping outside the problem.

You’re mirroring it & by mirroring it you are contributing to it.

The Part No One Wants to Admit

Believing “nothing matters” removes responsibility.

If your actions don’t matter, you don’t have to change.
You don’t have to look at your patterns.
You don’t have to do the uncomfortable work.

It protects you. But it also keeps you stuck.

Now I say this with love because I understand that protection mechanism well. It served me for many of my teen and young adult years. A sense of nihilism kept me safe from feeling all the deep emotions buried underneath. I knew I’d feel a hellish grief if I left it all in at once. And eventually I did, slowly but surely I began sitting with the darkness within myself so I could ensure it would no seep out into the world in a destructive manner.

What Personal Healing Actually Does

Healing ourselves doesn’t require us to deny reality.

It just asks us to take responsibility for our own through:

Our nervous system
Our patterns
Our reactions
Our behavior

And when those shift, our life shifts in real, transformational ways.

Our relationships change.
Our decisions improve.
Our presence becomes different.

Our impact becomes positive and beneficial. Regardless of how small we may perceive it to be.

Three Essential Truths That Can Restore Harmony to Our World

The Baseline Truth

Even if someone still says:
“It’s too small. It won’t change anything.”

Here’s what can’t be argued:

At minimum, personal healing stops you from making things worse.

And in practice, it usually does more.

It creates clarity instead of confusion. It offers another stable nervous system to the collective (the more the better, this is where real change comes from!)
It offers presence instead of reactivity.
And it feeds stability instead of chaos.

Those things ripple.

The Final Reality

You don’t control the entire world.
But you are not separate from it either.

Your state affects your actions.
Your actions affect others.
And that effect compounds.

That’s the ripple.
And whether someone believes in it or not—
they’re still participating in it.
